Most issues with PeerNotes can be resolved in just a few steps. Work through the relevant section below, and if you’re still stuck, the contact page has details on how to reach the team.

Extension won’t install

Because the PeerNotes extension is a pre-release build installed manually, a few things can go wrong during setup.
1

Enable Developer mode

Open your browser’s extension manager (usually at chrome://extensions or equivalent). Toggle Developer mode on — it’s typically in the top-right corner of the page. Without this, the browser won’t allow unpacked extensions to be loaded.
2

Extract the ZIP file fully

Make sure you have fully extracted the downloaded ZIP archive before loading it. Trying to load the ZIP file itself, or a partially extracted folder, is a common cause of installation failure. Extract it to a permanent location you won’t accidentally delete.
3

Select the correct folder

When you click Load unpacked, select the extracted folder — the one that contains the manifest.json file. Don’t select a parent folder or the ZIP file itself.
4

Remove and re-add the extension

If the extension still won’t load, remove any existing failed entry from the extension manager, then try loading the unpacked folder again from scratch.
Don’t move or delete the extracted extension folder after installation. Your browser loads the extension directly from that folder, so removing it will break the extension.

Extension icon not showing in toolbar

After a successful installation, the PeerNotes icon may not appear in your browser toolbar straight away.
1

Open the extensions menu

Click the puzzle-piece icon (🧩) in your browser toolbar to open the extensions panel.
2

Pin PeerNotes

Find PeerNotes in the list and click the pin icon next to it. This keeps the PeerNotes icon permanently visible in your toolbar so you can access the web clipper from any page.

Web clipper not working

If clicking the PeerNotes extension icon does nothing, or the clipper fails to save content, try the following steps.
1

Reload the page

Refresh the page you’re trying to clip from. Extensions sometimes need a page reload to activate properly, especially after first installation.
2

Check that the extension is enabled

Open your browser’s extension manager and confirm that PeerNotes is toggled on. If it’s disabled, enable it and reload the page.
3

Try re-clipping

Close the clipper panel if it’s open, reload the page, and try clipping again. Occasionally a transient error causes a single clip to fail.
4

Check your login status

The web clipper requires an active PeerNotes session. Open peernotes.io and confirm you’re logged in, then return to the page and try again.

Can’t log in

If you’re unable to sign in to your PeerNotes account, work through these checks.
1

Check your email for an invitation

PeerNotes is in early access. You need an invitation email before you can create an account. If you haven’t received one yet, make sure you’ve signed up on the early access waitlist.
2

Confirm you're using the right login page

Always log in at peernotes.io. Bookmarking the correct URL avoids accidentally landing on a phishing page or an old cached version.
3

Reset your password

If you’ve forgotten your password, use the Forgot password link on the login page. Check your spam or junk folder if the reset email doesn’t arrive within a few minutes.
4

Check for a typo in your email address

Ensure you’re entering the exact email address you used when accepting your invitation.
If your account was created under a team workspace, your team admin may need to confirm your account is active and that you have the correct role assigned.

Notes not syncing

If changes you make in PeerNotes aren’t appearing on other devices or for your collaborators, try these steps.
1

Refresh the page

A manual page refresh forces the app to pull the latest data from the server. This resolves most one-off sync hiccups.
2

Check your internet connection

PeerNotes requires an active internet connection to sync in real time. Confirm your device is online and that no firewall or VPN is blocking access to peernotes.io.
3

Log out and log back in

Sign out from peernotes.io, then sign back in. This refreshes your session and clears any stale authentication state that could be preventing sync.
4

Try a different browser or device

If the issue is limited to one browser, try opening PeerNotes in a different browser or on another device to isolate whether it’s a local problem.

Extension needs updating

The PeerNotes browser extension doesn’t update automatically because it’s installed as an unpacked extension. When a new version is released, follow these steps to update.
1

Download the latest ZIP

Download the newest version of the extension ZIP from the link provided in your invitation email or from the Discord community.
2

Extract the new ZIP

Extract the contents to a folder on your computer. You can overwrite your existing extracted folder, or extract to a new location.
3

Reload the extension in your browser

Open your browser’s extension manager, find PeerNotes, and click the reload icon (↺) if you replaced the files in the same folder. If you extracted to a new location, click Load unpacked and select the new folder — then remove the old entry.
Keep your extension ZIP in a dedicated folder so you always know where to find it when an update is available.
