# Work as a team in a shared PeerNotes workspace

> A PeerNotes workspace is where a team thinks together — private notebooks for each member, shared notes for the group, organized by topics.

A [**workspace**](/core-concepts/workspace) is where a group thinks together in PeerNotes — a seminar, a research group, a knowledge team, a book club. Each member captures privately inside it; what the group shares is the developed thinking. One home, two layers: yours, and the team's. This guide is about working in one as a team; for the settings that shape it, see [Workspace settings](/features/workspace-settings).

## Private by default, shared when you choose

Every [thought](/core-concepts/thoughts), [note](/core-concepts/notes), and [source](/core-concepts/sources) starts **private to you**. A per-item **Share with workspace** toggle makes it visible to the whole team in that feed's **Shared** view, open for comments — and back to private any time. Notes can also take [collaborators](/features/collaborators) who edit alongside you.

This split is what makes PeerNotes work: capture stays honest because it starts private, and the shared layer stays high-signal because everything in it was deliberately shared. See [Sharing & privacy](/features/sharing) for the full picture, including per-type defaults.

## Members and administrators

Workspaces have two roles:

* **Members** capture their own thoughts, collaborate on notes they're invited to, and read everything shared with the workspace.
* **Administrators** manage the workspace itself — its settings, members, and topics.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create a workspace">
    Give it a name, and optionally seed it with the topics you know you'll be thinking about.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Invite members by email">
    Add teammates from [Workspace settings → People](/features/workspace-settings#people) — you can invite members and add topics anytime.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add administrators (optional)">
    Share the admin role with co-organizers who should manage members and settings alongside you.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Navigate the workspace

* **Sidebar feeds** — Thoughts, Notes, and Sources each have their own feed, so you always know which layer you're looking at. Each feed has a **Shared** view showing what the team has shared.
* **Search** — press **⌘K** (Mac) or **Ctrl K** (Windows) to search across your workspace from anywhere.
* **Topics** — browse the Topics page to see the workspace's themes and dive into everything on a subject.
* **Chat** — ask the [Peer Agent](/core-concepts/peer-agent) about anything in the workspace, or tag it in a comment on any thought, note, or source.

## Multiple workspaces

You can belong to several workspaces — say, one for your team and one for a reading group — and switch between them from the workspace switcher. Each workspace is fully separate: its own members, topics, content, and chat.

<Tip>
  **Treat shared notes as the workspace's record.** When thinking matures — a decision, a finding, a synthesis worth keeping — share it. Over time the Shared view of the Notes feed becomes the knowledge base a new member can read to understand how the group thinks.
