# User preferences: personalize how you work in PeerNotes

> Set your PeerNotes preferences — persona, AI instructions and Peer Agent permissions, appearance, voice, default sharing, and email notifications.

User preferences are yours alone and follow you into every [workspace](/core-concepts/workspace) you belong to. Open them from the sidebar — choose **Preferences**.

## Persona

How PeerNotes and the [Peer Agent](/core-concepts/peer-agent) address you and pitch their responses.

| Field                               | Notes                                                                                                                      |
| ----------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **What should PeerNotes call you?** | A first name or nickname, up to 40 characters.                                                                             |
| **What best describes your work?**  | Engineering, Product management, Design, Marketing, Sales, Education, Research, Founder / executive, Operations, or Other. |

## AI

Two things live here: standing instructions for PeerNotes AI, and the [Peer Agent](/core-concepts/peer-agent) permissions for your content.

### Instructions for PeerNotes AI

Free text, up to 1000 characters. PeerNotes keeps these in mind **across all your workspaces** — for example: *"I focus on product for my startup but also write Node, Next.js, and TypeScript."*

### Peer Agent

A grid of toggles for **Thoughts**, **Notes**, and **Sources**:

| Column      | What it controls                                                                        |
| ----------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Comment** | Whether the Peer Agent may comment on your own thoughts, notes, or sources.             |
| **Tag**     | Whether the Peer Agent may mention you in *other people's* thoughts, notes, or sources. |

Every toggle is on by default. These are separate from the workspace-wide [Agents settings](/features/workspace-settings#agents) an admin controls.

## Appearance

Choose your theme: **System**, **Light**, or **Dark**.

## Voice

Settings for [listening to notes and sources](/features/listen) read aloud.

* **Style** — the voice used for playback (Alloy, Echo, Fable, Onyx, Nova, or Shimmer).
* **Speed** — 0.75×, 1×, 1.25×, 1.5×, or 2×.

## Sharing

Sets whether **new** content is shared with your workspace automatically, per type — **Thoughts**, **Notes**, **Sources**.

All three are **off** by default: new content starts private, and you share it deliberately. Turning one on flips the default for that type; you can still change any individual item afterwards.

## Notifications

Choose which events send you an **email**. All are on by default.

| Event                  | Triggers when                                                       |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Mentions**           | Someone mentions you in a thought or note                           |
| **Comments**           | Someone comments on your thoughts or notes                          |
| **Thought classified** | One or more of your thoughts have been auto-classified into a topic |
| **Source classified**  | One or more of your sources have been auto-classified into a topic  |
