# Dictate a thought

> Capture a thought by voice — PeerNotes records from your microphone and transcribes it straight into the capture box.

Talk a thought out instead of typing it. PeerNotes records from your microphone and drops the transcript into the **What's on your mind?** box in the [Thoughts](/core-concepts/thoughts) feed.

## Dictate

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start recording">
    Click the **microphone** button on the capture box — from the collapsed box, or from its footer once it's open. Recording begins immediately and the box shows **Recording…**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Speak, then stop">
    Say what's on your mind and select **Stop**. PeerNotes shows **Transcribing…** while it turns the audio into text.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review and capture">
    The transcript drops into the box — on a new line if you'd already typed something. Edit it, add a [topic](/core-concepts/topics) or the share toggle if you want, then select **Capture Thought**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Closing the box before you stop discards the recording without transcribing it.

<Note>
  Dictation needs microphone access and a browser that supports audio recording. If you've blocked the mic, PeerNotes shows *"Microphone access denied"* — re-allow it in your browser's site settings and try again.
